Description

The Art Cabriolet (AC) began work at The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) in May 2012. In partnership with and under the guidance of Education Institute at RCH, AC began a unique arts program that incorporated writing, painting and finally publishing a collaborative book, ‘The Adventures of Fin and Aivilo’. AC solely conducted a pilot art project at the RCH for priority education support patients identified by staff of the Education Institute. The project took place during weekly afternoon education support sessions, across all wards of the hospital, including day medical ward, working with children and young people requiring educational support. In particular, the project aimed to work with long stay or frequent visit patients who miss significant amounts of school due to their health condition.

2012 was ‘The National Year of Reading’ which was incorporated in all school curriculums across Australia. The premise was to encourage reading at all levels at primary and secondary schools. AC’s program encouraged participants to read, write and illustrate collaboratively with children at RCH. Thirteen of the children who worked with AC were involved in helping to create a book that was professionally published at the conclusion of the project. These participants mainly worked individually with the AC artist to create a page of text and an accompanying illustration. Participants worked sequentially on the book, with each new student building on the work previously created by other children. Those participating in the book project were given full ownership of the collaborative project, with guidance from the AC staff and Education Institute teachers as appropriate. At the conclusion of the pilot session and the published book, participants were delighted with the outcome and Education Institute continued this work with the next book that was published June 2013 , ‘The Adventures of Fin and Aivilo at the Beach’.

‘The Adventures of Fin and Aivilo’ recently won an international award at the Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards. The book was awarded a Bronze medal for best book by Youth Author (under 18) Bronze: The Adventures of Fin and Aivilo, by various authors (The Art Cabriolet).

The Art Cabriolet are very proud and honoured to have received this award
